Firstly, I would say this movie has a great mystery. I would also say that the explicit content of the movie is not a detractor. I think that it works to enhance the setting, and I think the story and messaging couldn’t have been done without Nicholas Cage walking through a hallway of BDSM guys. And all the other stuff too.
