The Doom Generation
WOW where do I start on this movie!! This was recommended to me by a friend and I was very reluctant to watch it… but this movie was excellent!
The Doom Generation is pure chaotic perfection! The film is purposefully designed in an artificial world where everything is completely and deliberately exaggerated! The dialogue and violence are unhinged at times but it somehow clicks and makes sense so perfectly! It’s not trying to be “realistic”… it feels like an exaggerated dream or nightmare I can’t really put my head around it…
After reading how Amy Blue got this part makes it so much more iconic for her! Her recklessness and dark energy/ humour is extremely funny… Not just her but the entire trios chemistry keeps the film constantly engaging.. and visually this film is unforgettable. It’s harsh lighting, saturated colours and that grunge 90s aesthetic makes every frame feel so hardcore!
The film explores some deep aspects and themes.. with the main one being nihilism. The characters drift through life with no cares thinking nothing matters violence and death all feel equally as meaningless. This type of attitude reflects on a kind of 90s youth disconnection to the world… no clear future no beliefs in the system or really anything just impulse and pure survival.
Absolutely everything in this film is exaggerated the constant escalation of violence is super obviously intentional… brutality isn’t shown as heroic it’s random and often ridiculous. This randomness proves the idea that the world they are living has no moral structure or logic… like why is the cashier pulling a gun on someone for dropping their cigarette XD.
This definitely isn’t the kind of film for everyone but this film really clicked for me… it’s a film you don’t often experience it’s weirdly meaningful in its own twisted way.
