High School
i think the common perception of this film is that the teachers were so strict and hardheaded, and there is some truth to this. there is certainly a dynamic of the individualist, free-spirited youth and the uniform, old fashioned adults that was very common in the 1960s. but there are also moments where the students and teachers, even amidst a disciplinary scene, where they laugh together, where the teachers encourage the students, where the teachers connect with the students and in general act very human. and that’s true for the students too (who i see some call overtly rebellious). that is, i think, the point of the film. the humanness of these given people at this given high school, at this give time, at this given moment. it is an illuminating insight of the sixties and its the best way to truly study and immerse yourself in the history of the 1960s.
