Devs
“Devs”… I came across this from a reasonably dependable instagram channel suggestion. The premise of the show from what appeared on the 20 second clip seemed to question the existence / legitimacy of free-will and what if it doesn’t exist (cause and effect loop is the fiction part of the sci-fi here) and we are on a fixed pathway, if so, given the computational power and the correct data, we can extrapolate to the future and backtrack our existence and the universe. Which is what I expected the 8 episodes to unravel, with philosophical contradictions and so on.
It turned out to shed light on other areas majorly instead, yes that was the purpose of the characters (who sadly didn’t have decent acting skills nor the necessary dialogues for the situation at hand) in the show but it diverted majorly towards the plot buildup that led to the D-day. How much power do monopolistic tech giants hold and crime thriller basically, took up most part of the script. The exploration and the unravelling of what was happening took place in the last 1.5 episodes, it was good but should have been taken a larget part of the central story and there are a few loopholes.
The cinematography and the sound design felt immaculate, like Denis Villeneuve but for TV, the pacing was also very good, but it didn’t deliver the sci-fi I expected it to, much of the premise of the film was left unexplored. I wanted westworld x ex-machina, stupid of me but still great watch.
