The most nationalistic and anti-communist film I have seen and it startles me that it is the experimental cinema of Zulawski to get that title. At the dawn of the Third and final Polish Partition by Prussia, Russia and Austria we see the Biblical scenes of Sodom as the requiem of a dying nation. People murdering each other, selling their family and brethren and indulging in orgies, rapes and intoxicated frenzy. Among the moral ruins of the former most powerful country in Europe which salvaged Europe from barbarism and slavery stands our protagonist- accused of conspiring to murder the King of Poland and destroying the foreign magnates who sold the Commonwealth to rival nations. In an attempt to save his life and continue his oath to the Motherland he bails on his friends to a mysterious  man in a black robe who follows him throughout the movie. The movie progressively tries to suggest the notion that this is a devil deal for Jacob’s soul. However due to the segmantic nature of Zulawski’s dialogues the terms of the deal remain unclear till the end of the movie. There is this growing sensation that with every deal he gets closer to getting bits and parts of Jacob’s soul. In the fashion of Goethe’s Mephistopheles each benefit he bestows upon the hero simply throws him blind into another dark alley which naturally forces his will into another deal. Ultimately the hero becomes corrupted as he relies on the devil himself to fulfil a noble purpose. With the cause followed by no one and living in an Endtimes and a period of Kali Yuga he hopelessly wanders around and suffers the consequences of his doomed quest. The movie ultimately asks- can a noble cause be pursued with sacrificing your humanity? Can you enoble a people who have surrendered themselves? Is there a belonging to be found in a world without fathers and country solidarity? What to do in a ruined world?
