Down by Law
everything driven by character-- wickedly funny, endearing; never trying to produce any certain kind of feeling ... It's setting, down south, bayou country invades every pause, informs the gait of the film. So sparse this territory, and yet, its few residents are so large of character that there is no sense of emptiness.
I was beginning to think I knew where it was going-- i thought, oh its going to be Treasure of the Sierra Madre, or oh its maybe its Le Trou... but instead it relishes in the delight of its characters. That final shot blew me away. also shot of them in the sewer with the light of the water on the ceiling...
Roberto Benigni is a revelation.
