i may be biased coz i’ve been waiting the full 18 month however that is in my opinion one of the greatest of all time i dont care, ive always had oppenheimer as nolan’s best and this feels like its older brother, a flawed male lead who is seen as a hero but is in fact cursed with dishonour and guilt and dilemma. i came out of the cinema and could only say wow. it is sooo good and trust me no one had higher expectations than me and it met every one of them. The way it was filmed is the cherry on top, being quite literally revolutionary, the cinematography was obviously going to be amazing and it exceeded my expectations, being so comfortably dark in places whilst maintaining realistic colour and feel specifically in the boat scenes and establishing landscape. Obviously the story itself was always going to be amazing being a direct adaptation from Homers The Odyssey but that can take nothing away from the film itself, it’s still so captivating. Every performance across the board is brilliant but wow i’m a matt damon fan now, i’ve never really been a huge matt damon fan but after this he has a fan in me, it is quite easily the best performance of the year and is a staple for performances in recent years, you see all his love guilt pride ego arrogance shame courage and fear all in one performance, the lack of depth on board his ship could’ve defo been a negative but it perfectly compliments damon’s performance and just adds to his character, being so self focused a lot of the time. we see despite his best efforts he constantly wants to survive, something he says again and again even till the end when instead of giving up he continues to move forward. It’s an almost perfect 3 act film with the first act being complex with so much depth and intricacy perfectly applying the context needed for such a huge story, the second act masterfully incorporates the horror aspect of the odyssey and something so intriguing considering it was nolan’s first proper attempt at making something with such horror aspects. And the third had me through so many emotions of shock sadness hope awe and just absolute cinema, it is a masterpiece in its own right and i have no doubt it will be seen as even better in the future. Even the small messages tinkered throughout make such a huge impact such like the cutting of athena’s head at the end symbolising the end of this political stability and the struggle of ‘following the gods’ which was explored so well throughout and the hypocrisy of so many of Odysseus’s men, judging others for disobeying one god and being smug in the face of another through greed and gluttony. But for me the perfect scene in the film was when we revisited the atttack on troy towards the end. WOW. We finally understand the importance of Odysseuss plan to him as well as everyone else, and how he remembers it differently, he sees how he destroyed the ethics of Zeus’s law that ultimately put him through so many trials, the moment he unleashed true evil to the natural world and how he can live with that. So far it is the best film of the year and one of the greatest films of all time , even if i am impacted by my excitement leading up to the film. Is it in my top 4? maybe idk yet i’ll have to see but the only thing i see beating it this year has to be Dune 3 and that will come extremely close. just wow it lived up to all my expectations and was one of the greatest experiences ive ever had. The ONLY problem i had with it was in the first 15 despite it doing an effective job of providing context, it did feel slightly messy and throughout the film i felt alot of the scenes felt rushed or too fast which made like a choppy feel which was fine after the first half an hour once we had established the main plot however towards the beginning it felt like because it was so choppy it was difficult to dive in straight away. So basically i just wanted it to be longer ahahahah. Nope forget it it’s nolan’s magnum opus one of the best of all time an absolute epic im watching it again and it is in my top 5 of all time. I am the biggest fan ever of oppenheimer and this just tops it i think, the more i think about the film the longer it stays with me, specially the small scenes the moments of quiet and reflection similar to that of oppenheimer and to have that as well as the huge monumental sequences is just on another level. The pinnacle of this has to be the last 30 minutes having an insane ending that links everything together, but more specifically, the first reunion of Odysseus and Penelope, it is the culmination of everything the film represents, her struggle, his struggle, the guilt, the isolation the dishonour, all of it, it’s the quiet reflective scene i discussed prior but mixed with huge the huge epic scale of troy, it is a perfect scene and that 5 minute scene specifically is one of the best of all time and the best in the whole film and in my opinion nolan’s best ever scene. Prior to now i’ve been cautious abt calling it one of the best films of all time definitively but i feel that’s just because dune 3 is coming out this year and i feel that will also be in all time conversations but it’s true both of them just so happen to release in the same year. So it is definitely up there, for me anyway, it is the best film to ever contrast such large scenes with smaller quieter scenes and really leans into that old marlon brando style of being comfortable being reflective and quiet allowing the cameras to pick up sounds and emotions instead of hyperbolising and ruining a grounded performance, a lot of this film is just pure reflection with odysseus which when shown next to the cyclops is crazy ahahahaa. I’ve watched is 4 times now in imaxx and been brought to tears, this film just means so much to me, the time i’ve waited the message, the actors, ludwig, everything just means so much to me, i refuse to believe anyone loves this film like i do, ‘when the walls of troy burned, so did the world’… ‘what was lost… the lives?… the time’, just amazing i love it so much, after a couple of times u realise so much more and the arrogance of odysseus becomes so much more recognisable.
