Werckmeister Harmonies
In just 39 shots, Bela Tarr is able to tell the harrowing story of a Hungarian village destroyed by the arrival of a traveling circus, and its premier attraction, a whale carcass. This film reminded me a lot of Haneke's The White Ribbon, with its theme of mass hysteria and internal destruction. Overall very impressed by many of the tracking shots, I found them almost entrancing, but I felt the movie was every so slightly lacking in something that I just can't put my finger on.
