Eraserhead
Eraserhead is David Lynch's debut, a surreal horror film that took five years to film and also happens to be Kubrick's favorite movie.
This is the strangest movie I've ever watched. I spent the entire 1.5 hours trying to figure out what was going on. Just after Eraserhead I understood why Lynch refused to interpret his films and called, first of all, to try to understand the feelings from what you saw, and only then find your own meaning.
Throughout the film I felt fear. fear that I do not understand the structure of this world. it is too strange and unpredictable. why does Henry have a handful of soil on his nightstand next to his bed instead of a flowerpot, from which a tree grows? why is there hay scattered instead of things in the dresser? why does he carry a bunch of pens in the top pocket of his jacket? and finally, why is his child such an ugly and incomprehensible monster?!?! there are no answers to these questions. there is only the fact of their existence, with which the viewer must try to come to terms. however, the main emotions experienced are enveloping fear and horror. such a picture metaphorically describes one of the facets of the real life.
The faceless mother does not love her ugly child and always runs away from him to her parents. However, Henry seems to feel warmth towards him and this is amazing. There is a connection between them, which is confirmed when Henry's head flies off and in place of the neck appears the same ugly thing as his son. No matter what we are externally - our essence is the same for all of us. Someone is fragile, sensitive and initially doomed to death, like an unfortunate child, and someone tries to disguise this fragility, builds a shell around themselves and hides under a mask of deliberate seriousness.
I was struck by the scenes at the dinner with the family of this faceless girl. Everything is strange there... her and her mother's attacks, the frozen and unblinking old woman, the grandfather as if fake, the fried chicken, moving and emitting dark juice. I see in these details the evil that is always in our lives. It is always nearby and sometimes penetrates even into the everyday and intimate moments of our everyday life. There is no escape or hide from it.
finally, sounds. Constant noise in the background, because of which internal anxiety grows. A crying child adds even more expression. Everything in this world seems to be scary and dangerous. You want to close your eyes - do everything, just not to accept reality, not to live through it. Henry does that. He is afraid of the bride's parents (condemnation), the child (responsibility), so he escapes into his world with a stage on which a girl with cheeks made of construction foam performs. There he seems to find understanding, there his "metamorphosis" takes place (an allusion to Kafka).
I was fascinated by the play with light and shadow. This is literally a masterpiece. Rare, but such a fitting music. Static shots, complexity of spaces - all of this (referring to German cinematic expressionism) reflects Lynch's uniqueness as an artist and creator.
Eraserhead is a movie that you don't need to try to understand and turn inside out. This is a movie that you need to feel, into which you need to immerse yourself, live every frame and explore your feelings.
