Dekalog
Dekalog is auteurism at its most monumental. I believe it stands as one of the most eclectic and accomplished works of cinema and art to date. It is deeply philosophical and complex, yet structured and presented in a way that remains digestible. Its clear themes conceal some of the most fascinating questions and immaculate subtexts I’ve ever encountered.
That said, my head feels like a microwaved piece of tinfoil, I probably should have watched an episode a day instead of binging the last seven episodes. Still, I’m incredibly happy to have had the opportunity to watch it. It will definitely grow on me, and I’m confident we’ll never see anything quite like it again. I can’t recommend it enough.
I will also say I’m rating this both as 10 separate episodes and as one cohesive project. As a standalone work, Dekalog is likely one of the greatest films ever made. However, when broken into 10 individual pieces, the quality fluctuates. When viewed as a single entity, though, it feels much more nuanced and consistent, as the interconnected stories weave together to create a deeper and more complex narrative.
