Rope
An exploration of cynical moral ambiguity and psychological tension. No one came close to Hitchcock in this regard. Structural and technical mastery, fused with an expertly crafted plot that sustains an unnerving tension throughout its runtime.
An experimental which became a timeless classic. To witness Hitchcock orchestrating this behind the scenes would have been extraordinary. And what better way to carry out such a film than with the legendary screen presence and effortless charisma of James Stewart. An all time great and one of my favourite actors.
Though, I feel like this was more the magnum opus of Hitchcock’s technical brilliance rather than a deeply profound and cinematically transcendent film itself. Hence why it’s a 4.5.
