Apocalypse Now
"The horror, the horror."
It is arguably the biggest achievement in cinema. Despite the infamous disasters whilst in production the film remains an undisputed masterpiece that no other war film touches.
Coppola makes the madness come alive, whether it be Kilgore or Kurtz or The Jungle. The madness is created by one of the best scripts oat, the lighting, the music and sheer 'acting' involved. The dialogue is so dense and ingenious that it could have at least 10 cases for best quote ever.
The comparison that can made between Kilgore and Kurtz is the backbone of the entire film. On one hand Kilgore is enthusiastic, outward and almost comic. He revels in warfare and enjoys it, and makes Vietnam like America to reinforce this feeling that he is 'at home' , his ethos is perfectly encapsulated in the line, "One day this war is gonna end" conveying almost disappointment by the fact. However Kurtz is quiet and reserved. He is disgusted by the army and their strange moral compass, "We train young men to drop fire on people but their commanders won't allow them to write Fuck! on their aeroplanes because it's obscene." He believes that if they abandon this morality and "Make horror your friend." That the war would be over very soon.
