„A mother is a woman who can take the place of all others but whose place no one else can take.“
What a movie. I still haven’t fully processed everything, but I’ll write down my thoughts.
Since I have not seen the original I went into this movie without any expectations and no idea what was awaiting me. Before I give my comment on anything, I want to start off by saying that the vibes this movie gives off are fantastic, while this movie features some very gruesome, eerie and memorable images.
There are so many things I love about this movie. One of them being the color palette, not only the color grading itself but also its representation in clothing, the furniture, etc. Then there is Thom Yorke providing the score for this film. It really helps settling the eerie almost melancholic tone. Very big fan of the song sung in the finale. He just knows how to make music well. Some of the scenes in this movie are brutally raw, e.g. when Susie auditions in the mirror room without any music whatsoever. Generally, the choreography of the dances in this movie aren’t lustful or seductive in any way, they’re very punctual and fierce, almost making it feel like a fight.
The movie takes place in late 1970 Berlin during a time of unrest and violence. Though it isn’t essential to the plot it adds another very interesting layer to this movie the observer may think about.
Dakota Johnson’s performance in this movie impressed me very much, Tilda Swinton was fantastic.
