Atonement
This movie is a psychological exploration of guilt, memory, and the human need for redemption. The movie, instead of treating Brioney's false accusation of rape as a simple mistake, shows how someone's idea of perception and perception in general can be shaped by their immaturity, imagination, or desire to make right of situations they do not fully understand, which circles back to immaturity.
I genuinely feel this movie is perfect. The contrast between what could have happened and what did happen is so clear once you get to the end, and rewatching it with the perspective gained at the end is just beautiful. I don't think it is talked about enough how false accusations, like the ones thrown around in the beginning of this movie, can change someone's life.
The fact that she could never say sorry pains me even more because as I go about my life, there is so much I would like to say, so much I feel I need to say, not necessarily always asking for forgiveness, but just small comments. I think in todays society, and maybe I'm thinking about it too much, being nonchalant is seen as cool, leaving people on read is seen as cool, and not talking and being mysterious is seen as cool. I just want to say everything I want. I want to express myself everyday without the fear of being judged. I want to pour my heart out for the people I love platonically and romantically. I see myself so much in Brioney as she is not able to talk about this until releasing her book just before she dies/forgets everything, and obviously I'm not dying, but I hope I can confess everything I need to so I can die expressed.
