Nosferatu
I’m just so happy. You can tell Robert Eggers cares about Nosferatu so deeply. Just so moody. I love how the darkness envelops you. It walks the lines of drama and freak so well. Any less and I would have been disappointed, and any more and I would’ve felt that he was trying too hard to convey some idea of importance or magnitude. Gives the story a revamp that it deserves. Stays true to the things that make it great and is elevated by the skills that Eggers has shown time and time again that he possesses. Who needs color when you have such great contrast and lighting. God I wish all moonlight felt as good as this movie makes it feel.
And don’t even get me started on the performances. Lily Rose Depp being a snotty spastic mess. Bill skarsgaard really just loses himself in this role. As much as I love the pale bald count orloks of movies past, I’m so pleased they went with a new direction. Nosferatu being a scrawny scabby walking pestilence decked out in the coolest fur coat you’ve ever seen with a mustache that would make waluigi jealous is just genius. His arthritic ass fingers, his opaque glassy eyes. Eggers almost makes Romanian mythology cool. This man embodies the rat king in the best way possible. Of course this has all been said before but I also wanna give a shoutout to the guy who played Knock because goddamn he was absolutely mad. I think his scenes have got to be some of my favorite, especially with the bird.
SpoilersBut yeah anyway this movie rocks. It’s scary, it’s beautiful, it’s ancient, it’s new. It’s epic. The final scene where they cover Ellen in the same dead flowers Thomas got her before he left for his trip is insane. Like woah. So many levels there. The way they loved each other but still failed. The way she only ever asked to be together, and how both times he left her high and dry. Obviously her shame, and the way it hurts both her and those around her is a big theme. But also Thomas’ desire to live up to this idea of a man and husband he has imagined is a big driver of the doom in this movie. He wants to provide for Ellen, but neglects her in the ways that matter. He wants to be a hero, but is ultimately just a pawn. She is the dead flowers. A wasted prize. Life drained, until all that’s left is a beautiful corpse. How even dried flowers release a scent, masking the smell of death and decay (shoutout plague masks). Like broooooooooo come onnnnnnn this movie is a modern masterpiece. Ok Im done.
