Twin Peaks
The best to ever do it. Obviously it's no secret how much Lynch was influenced by dreams, and it's not really saying much to point out that his stuff is very surreal. But I'm always left speechless by how much genuine humanity he is able to convey in spite of that. I think that's really what sets him apart from a great number of 'experimental' filmmakers: his absolute refusal to hide behind irony. Underneath the strange characters, wacky dialogue, odd narratives, and lingering shots is the pure essence of what David Lynch thinks it means to be a person. Nobody has ever so fully captured shame, partnership, and curiosity as he did, which is even more impressive considering how distinctly unrealistic his approach was. I will forever admire the sincerity of his works- to look everyone in the eyes and say, "This is what it means to me to be broken. To be in love. These are my hopes, and these are my fears." To broadcast your dreams and nightmares to the world, airing out your subconscious, knowing full well that many people will not accept it graciously.
There is not an ounce of any of his stories that I can relate to, and yet it is through his movies that I feel the most seen. I'm forever grateful for the way he's shaped my outlook on life: being okay with being misunderstood. Understanding that unadulterated authenticity can be one's greatest asset, no matter how strange. Learning to love the small things, about life and people. That every detail matters, even if it doesn't quite make sense yet.
I'll never look at a cup of coffee the same way again. Thank you, David Lynch. You'll forever be alive in my dreams <3
