Trainspotting
“Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family…”
I don’t know what I was expecting, but it wasn’t this perfect, chaotic, gut-wrenching, hilarious, deeply disgusting, and oddly beautiful fever dream of a film. Danny Boyle directs the hell out of this, every scene feels like a punch to the face followed by a warm cigarette in a dingy pub toilet. The energy, the editing, the soundtrack (holy fuck that soundtrack), the sheer 90s grime and nihilism of it all? Impeccable.
Ewan McGregor’s Renton is the most loveable little shit I’ve ever rooted for. Sick Boy is insufferable in the exact way your toxic mate you can’t quite get rid of is. And Begbie? I’m convinced he’s one of the greatest, most terrifying characters ever put on screen. Absolutely unhinged.
Also, can we talk about how this film makes you want to live fast and die young but also never touch heroin ever? That’s a tightrope few films walk as well as this one.
Would’ve given it a full 5 stars if it wasn’t for that one scene I’ll never emotionally recover from (if you’ve seen it, you know exactly which one I mean).
Anyway, I fucking loved it. Instant favorite. I feel like I need a shower.
