Vertigo
Hooked from the opening credits.
From the music to the central recurring motif, Vertigo, directed by Alfred Hitchcock, is possibly the most genius film I have ever watched.
Not only is this movie incredibly modern, but the visuals are so perfect that they seem almost futuristic.
A recurring theme is repetition and obsession; Hitchcock uses it interweavingly through his spiral motif. The spiral can be found in several scenes, such as the staircase and her hair. Additionally, the spiral is hidden within the plot itself, where several moments repeat throughout the film, almost as if the first half folds in on the second half.
"Obsession is an unhealthy and persistent preoccupation with an idea." Obsession in this film is powered by repetition. A spiral represents this Obsession with a negative descent inward eternally.
To amplify this theme, the music in Vertigo is intelligently crafted to resemble a spiral.
