Autumn Sonata
'the most horrible thing was when you hated Papa, you'd call him, :my dearest' and 'when you were tired of me you'd say ''darling little girl''
This film is a absolute masterpiece and Bergman at his best.
you just feel the raw emotion of this with build-up of these themes of abandonment through the first and second quarter of the film with wonderful muted expressions of isolation and emotion which rather than conning out of the fake crying uses withdrawal of emotions and subtle hints of emotion which is spectacularly shown through Liv Ulman who really makes it shown that she is trying to hold herself together.
This then reaches a boiling point and shows the raw emotional outburst in a scene of pure expression from Liv Ulman and one of the best scenes of acting i have ever seen on film this paired with the scared and pathetic act of Ingrid Bergman who finally is forced to confront her fears and problems that she has caused to the family.
Berman then beautifully sums up the film with a haunting rendition of the violin that shows the sadness of Liv Ullmans character as well as the character of Lena Nyman and the effect that this has had on her character as well creating a haunting and melancholy ending to this beautiful film which wraps up all characters arcs.
This is one of few films that manages to match the beautiful cinematography, Warm and cold tones as well as keep the serious tones and themes of abandonment and responsibility through stunning performances from all involved including one of the best all time from Liv Ulman and a accurate representation of disability and its tragedy from Lena Nyman.
This is a absolute 5 star film and one of the best of it's genre and probably Bergman's best .
