Searching
My. Lord.
I became intrigued with seeing this movie once I realized it's technology-based style, but yet not looking cheesy. The plot is cookie-cutter: daughter goes missing, Dad looks for her. But I figured this take on that cliche would be unique.
This movie is magnificent, and easily a top 3 movie of 2018 in my book. I expected good, but not this good.
You can sometimes tell how a movie will be by its first ten minutes. It either grabs you or loses you right off the bat. Searching doesn't just grab you; it yanks you into paying attention. In six minutes, you already feel like you personally know this family. Simply through pictures and videos. I knew after this that I would enjoy myself.
The movie only heats up. Once Margot doesn't come home, the tension builds. You try to be the detective and predict what happened to her, but it keeps you on your toes constantly. Every time the characters get a lead, something shuts that down. The confusion is as exhausting to you as it is David.
The film has countless twists and turns, but the main plot twist is remarkably well executed. Add in a chilling score and it makes for a brilliant thriller.
I'm glad this budget paid the price to use company website names. The websites David searched were all well-known, so it made the suspense feel more authentic.
This movie is 90 minutes, and I am so glad. A longer runtime would have slowed the pace, and that would have hurt the final product. This movie is so fast, so you don't lose interest. It doesn't overstay it's welcome.
I have no real complaints. I'd be grasping for straws to find something I didn't like. I've seen it twice and would easily see it again.
