If a lie can satisfy reality, is the truth inevitably cruel, and do you need it? The obvious argument against this is that truth is simply objective, but I find that bitterly unsatisfactory. I’ve watched this at a curious point in my life. An obsession to know myself and the world around me is in direct conflict with my constant failures. I told myself growing up, that every adult was simply pretending to know what they’re doing, and this belief only shattered any foundational trust I’d had with adults in my life. Kiarostami. I love you. Your movies exist between that narrow fissure of certainty and uncertainty, knowledge and ignorance. It pours confidence into me. I love it.

I’ve watched part of this over the years but avoided immersing myself because a part of my identity I haven’t explored is here. Thank you, Barry Jenkins.

white women flicks

a journey of a child with valid contempt for the many adults in his life who continuously fail him emotionally and physically. I like how this film doesn’t romanticize the “innocence” of youth, that tenderness is left to itself.
