Pistol
I really enjoyed this series!
It’s mostly Danny Boyle’s stylistic flare over substance, with fever-dream-like visuals, but it can become pretty melodramatic and cartoonish at times. As for the nitty-gritty, it’s a pretty standard biopic for the most part — nothing revolutionary — but it is well-made; it definitely captures the rise and fall of such a chaotic and infamous band. Particularly like how it doesn’t centre itself around the spectacle of Sid Vicious for once, as media about the Sex Pistols is oversaturated with that already. The cinematography is also exceptional at capturing that gritty late-70’s punk flare.
The casting and performances were overall superb! I specifically want to focus on two performances in particular. Firstly, Thomas Brodie-Sangster was wondrous as Malcolm McLaren. Furthermore, Anson Boon was able to replicate Johnny Rotten’s mannerisms so meticulously without letting the character become caricatural.
Was that a Thanos-style Johnny Rotten reveal at the end of episode 1?
