A Clockwork Orange
Fucking great film. I remember watching it when it was shown on UK TV for the first time in like 2001/02 and I got kinda obsessed with it, still have the VHS I borrowed from a college friend and then 'forgot' to return. Wasn't my first Kubrick, think that was FMJ, but this one really made me realise this dude's a genius and I went looking for more of his stuff.
Despite watching it a ton as a teen and in my early 00s on VHS and then DVD many moons ago I've not watched this in ages. Bought a 4K of it either late last year or early this year and kept on putting off watching it until now. Think I was a bit nervous of it not living up to my old (poor) memories of how good it was but I shouldn't have worried it. Feels a bit different this time though, feels more like a horror film to me now. Guess maybe that means I've matured a bit over the decades (lmao nah I'm still a fucking idiot).
Over the years I've spent a lot of time in the shower or staring at the ceiling in the middle of the night thinking about free will and determinism and its consequences and how it all ties up with creation, the existence of higher powers etc and as a certified idiot I have no answers, hell it just raises more questions and makes you feel a bit uncomfortable, smart fuckers have been thinking about and arguing about this shit for millennia so what hope have I got? But I think this is why the film really sticks in my mind. It's uncomfortable, yes, horrific at times, but like, y'know takes massive rip from the bong it really makes you think, man.
I've read criticisms about the over the top acting in this and for the most part it doesn't bother me at all apart from Patrick Magee. That weird ass face of anguish or whatever is just fucking hilarious and when he yells TRY THE WINE in that voice lol. TRY THE WINE really just stuck in my head all these years and I hear it whenever I see someone drinking wine.
Final thought: some of the top voted 'reviews' for the movie on this site are incredibly moronic.
