Cronos
A beautiful horror film that feels like a love letter to the Universal classic monster films and 1960s gothic horror flicks, but also very much its own thing with a unique take on the vampire story, and a bit fantastic fairy tale too.
The props are great, the Cronos device itself looks so cool and the inside shots were really well done. But also the statues and old books and the practical effects, everything just looks so cool. I love del Toro's vibe and vision. And this was his first feature movie? Remarkable!
The scenes with Jesus and his granddaughter Aurora were really touching, I really liked that little girl and her acceptance of all the fucked up shit that was going on and the love she has for this old dude despite getting all fucked up. The ending made me well up a bit, quite a feat for this autistic emotionally stunted/repressed cynical bastard. This film has a lot of heart in it.
Wish I could better express myself or had the cinema intelligence to properly analyse films because I really liked this and am struggling to say why. feel like an idiot just going haha film go brrrrrrr! I dunno, some shit about how del Toro leans on the monster tropes but inverts them, making the 'monsters' into tragic sympathetic objects of fascination, and that really appeals to me as a weirdo freak outcast kinda guy. I guess I'm trying to say that this film really touched me. Also as I'm getting older I've been thinking more about life and death and aging and there's some shit in here about it too, I dunno wtf I'm going on about but Ron Perlman is great and he has a funny face!
Actually this film had a few funny moments in it. Funny and melancholic and just beautiful. Parts of this made me think of Frankenstein as well. I know Del Toro is a big fan of the Boris Karloff Frankenstein and of course he also made his own version of the story last year, but you see some aspects of that here which is quite interesting.
So er, yeah, guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm a fan. If you read all that bollocks I'm very sorry.
I Think it might be a new favourite. Saw it at the cinema which was awesome and I'm going to buy that neat looking 4K UHD that BFI released.
