Lady Bird
i've seen this movie before, and its one I always come back to when thinking about mother daughter relationships. lady bird feels like the most relatable character in the way that she is frustrated with her mother and also with herself. we see it in the way that she desperately tries to fit in and pushes her only friend away just in an attempt to become popular. she's constantly trying to prove to others that she's better and smarter than they think she is, and also trying to prove to herself that she really is capable of everything she says she can do.
the brief mention of her mom saying that her mom was an abusive alcoholic always sticks in my mind . we see her mom try over and over agin to understand her daughter, and she seems to want what's best for her, yet she isn't able to convey that to lady bird. is this not the cycle of al mothers and daughters? are all of our mothers just trying to make sure that we don't make the same mistakes they did? there seems to be an inevitability of frustration with one another in the mother daughter relationship. will this inevitably lead to another mother trying to make sure that HER daughter doesn't do the same things she did? are we all forced to repeat the cycle?
another scene that always sticks in my mind is when lady bird is trying on dresses in the fitting room and asks her mom if she likes her, to which she replies that she loves her of course. in my mind, yes it is possible to love someone without liking them but that feels like the worst possible scenario. you're supposed to enjoy the fact that you love someone! you should LIKE your children as well as love them and that scene always makes me so sad because to think that your parent might not enjoy simply being around you makes my heart ache.
