Vagabond

Sensational. One of those films that will haunt me for years to come. This is the kind of unflinching, narrative filmmaking that makes me excited to be a film lover. So interesting to have watched this only after seeing some of Varda’s later documentary work. It’s clear she always saw the world in a way that’s so unvarnished, so unapologetic, and so well-suited to non-fictional storytelling. I love that she and Demy were both soulmates and complete opposites. Both of their bodies of work mean so much to me (yes I am tearing up as I write this).  Watched as part of the Criterion Challenge 19/52 #30.
