Blade Runner 2049
Oh man. I downloaded this app as a joke and I make fun of all the losers that put time and effort into their reviews. Well fuck it imma be one of those losers for this.
Blade Runner 2049. My god. I could go into every single part of this film and how it’s absolutely incredible but let’s just start with the basics. The cast. First off, Ryan Gosling and Ana De Armas starring…Denis Villeneuve directing… Rodger Deakin's doing the cinematography… Hans Zimmer doing the score… come on bruh… this shits OP. This movie is a cheat code and it shows.
This first time I saw this movie it was in the middle of the day, on my shitty 2013 MacBook, on some shady Chinese website that had Chinese subtitles overlayed over the English. If that didn’t stop me from giving this movie a 5/5 then I seriously don’t think anything could. Since then I’ve watched it numerous more times on HBO and just recently on Blu-ray. People who say you need to watch certain movies in the cinema are just plants by the establishment to boost ticket sales. Watch the movie wherever you want. If the movies good, it’s gonna be good wherever you watch it for the first time.
The Plot
“You look lonely”
Going into this movie I had absolutely no idea about any of the previous Blade Runner films. I knew they were almost cult classics from the Harrison Ford hype era. This has led me to go back and watch the original Blade Runner just so I could go back and understand this film even more.
This movie revolves around a Blade Runner named K played by Ryan Gosling. Blade Runners are replicants that we’re created to get rid of the old replicants that were inferior to the newer model due to their reception for emotion. We are introduced to K as he is “retiring” an older model replicant. He then has his baseline test which is used to provoke emotional responses from him. He passes and everything is okay. He goes home and we are introduced to the star of the show, Joi, played by Ana De Armas. Joi is a hologram that is meant to represent “anything you could want” from a partner. Not really sure why his bosses at the LAPD are just cool with him having this sort of emotional relationship with anything but whatever we’ll look past that.
Breaking down the key plot points:
1. K, the Blade Runner replicant who gets a case that leads him down a rabbit hole that questions who he is and causes him to wonder about his own legitimacy as a replicant with emotions.
2. Niander Wallace, CEO of the replicant manufacturing company, Wallace Corporation, is on a mission to be able to replicate replicants by actual impregnation of replicants. After countless unsuccessful tries he comes across the case that K is currently investigating and decides their goals to find this child born of replicant and human are one in the same.
3. Rick Deckard, a human (? it’s still debated in the community whether or not he is a human or replicant) that used to be a Blade Runner before he fell in love with Rachael, a replicant. They then had the baby that both Niander and K are looking for.
All of these stories interlap during the third and final act of the film where all of these plot elements are explained in more detail and resolved… to a point…
