“Thats why I’m with you. Because you say “I” for me”  This film explored marital disintegration in such a destructive and violent manner. Shot in 12 weeks and in West Berlin during the Cold War and utilising the wall to perhaps symbolise their marriage; that was once connected but turned divided.  Anna’s secret apartment could visualise their degrading relationship, and her attempts to clean it being futile.  Anna’s doppelgänger, Helen, symbolising the ideal version of Anna, the “perfect wife” to Mark . Visually she’s established as a symbol of purity; often wearing white contrasting Anna’s dark clothing.
