Much of this movie could have been avoided by people just talking to each other, and that got frustrating, but I think it is a symptom of something this movie does tremendously: portraying the shame and guilt that can come with depression and other serious mental health problems. I thought the final scene when Shoya opens back up to the world and meets the crowd’s eyes was masterfully done.

One thing about Fennell is she will get her shot. I don’t want to say it’s all stylization with her, because it’s so much more, but this is one of the best stylized movies I’ve seen. Just adored the creative choices made there. We have a scene in this when Heathcliff comes back and he’s in the mist and goodness I didn’t know us men were ALLOWED to look like that. I need to make serious changes. Leads were great. Supporting cast was outstanding. Alison Oliver is a STAR in the making. Hong Chau was magnificent. Didn’t love the theater experience though. There were people on their phones the ENTIRE time. I watched someone read the Wikipedia for the book after each scene. Remarkable. And honestly? The Wikipedia would have been little help. This is a poor adaptation of the book, but if you take it as a movie inspired by its characters, or a Fennell-ified retelling, it’s quite good. EDIT: I think that because it’s literally called Wuthering Heights, I have to dock it more than I did for being a piss poor adaptation. Still enjoyed tho. Also, if you’re a man that’s in love, please don’t act like Heathcliff. And if you’re woman in love, please make better choices than Catherine. Just bc it’s Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi doing is doesn’t mean it’s right! There were multiple levels of competing gaslighting that could have killed a small child.
