Blade Runner
I came in expecting a boring, badly paced film with crap visuals but at least an interesting theme and a good idea of a story to warrant a sequel 40 odd years later. I was so very wrong.
This film is near perfect. I’ve always enjoyed cyberpunk and neo-noir films and I’d like to think this is the perfect baby of the two genres. The visuals and landscapes were so well thought out and executed, I really liked the lighting work and the fact that they didn’t shy away from showing the flying cars or the complex buildings despite how hard it would’ve been to produce in the eighties. The set designers and artists did an incredible job creating such a technologically advanced world while still giving it a cold, lifeless feel to push that it’s dystopian.
The plot was amazing. I’ve always enjoyed dystopian sci-fi novels like Huxley or Orwell and after watching this film, I want to read the book this is based about. I’ve always loved it when films or games raise the idea of the humanness of artificial intelligence and I think this film does a great job in raising that question by asking how far will we be allowed to push artificial intelligence before they push back?
The film does such a great job building the characters of the androids that it’s difficult not to empathise for them. In the climactic peak of the film, Deckard fights Roy and it’s so difficult to watch because I didn’t want either of them to die yet when Roy kills Tyrell, I found it reasonable and sided with Roy. It’s such a well written story and the actors played their parts wonderfully.
Soundtrack was so cool as well, a bit funky and unexpected at times but it adds to it. I have nothing to criticise about it. It’s such a good film!
