i find it so fascinating the way that matt johnson has this insane ability to write/direct characters that are so deeply flawed and unlikable that even still just so happen to end up growing on you. his work has this really special flare to it. i loved the scene at the very beginning of the movie right before the title card comes in that has absolutely no music. it makes that scene so crushing. i feel like so many filmmakers are afraid of silence when it’s one of the most powerful tools in a filmmaker’s toolbelt. i have no idea if this is an accurate portrayal of anthony bourdain, but i think it’s absolutely wonderful. i’m a big fan of movies that take a famous person and examine one section of their life that influenced them heavily as a person ala a complete unknown or springsteen: deliver me from nowhere. i’m so biased with this movie because i love dominic sessa and antonio banderas. lowkey a match made in heaven. anyway tldr; matt johnson is a god

i need a detailed breakdown of all the film references. about jumped out of my seat with excitement when it showed charlie chaplin

no matter what kind of pretty red bow you wrap up your racist propaganda in, it’s still racist propaganda. also, the acting is lowkey dogwater and the writing is so melodramatic and ridiculous. i genuinely believe people only like this because it’s three hours and well-shot
