From What Is Before
"I feel like hell is coming"
Incredibly devastating in a way I wasn't at all prepared for. What starts out as a film that follows these people around doing their daily chores turns into, as the quote says, a living hell. It can't possibly get any worse, right?
"We are here to protect you no need to be scared"
"When the people learned you were coming here in our barrio and that you would be putting up a camp here, that's when the fear started to arise"
If you thought things were already bad enough, here comes the army to save the day. The lieutenant is always followed by at least three guards armed and ready to shoot at whatever threatens them. How can you think bringing these kind of weapons into a place so innocent will help anything? Bringing attention and conflict to a place that has been holding its own for years, there's just no need for them to be interrupted
"With all due respect but, the people of this little barrio are not stupid. They can sense things. They can see what's going on"
The military's constant undermining of the civilians is what really gets under my skin. Who are you to say you know more than the people who have lived here for years, even decades on end?
"And with what you have just told us, it's giving us the feeling that we're like, criminals"
Again, the constant patrolling with guns at the ready for whatever gets in their way. Nearly killing the one person trying to hold everything together for what, your own safety at the sacrifice of another's?
"I just noticed that you're treating this place like a war zone"
"You're right father, this is a war zone"
Damn
