The Substance

This is one of the most insane and realistic references to the unreasonable beauty standards that women are held to everyday. We watch a woman struggle with her age as she becomes less desirable and pretty to the world around her, and we watch her try to completely change herself to become someone who’s “better” yet she frames it as being the best version of herself. The “best version” isn’t for her or her happiness, it’s for the pleasure of others. Beauty norms in our society are dangerous and this is such a great physical representation of it. Trying to live up to these can drive women insane and plant a deep rooted hatred that can lead to a painful end.
