American Psycho
i like to dissect girls. did you know i'm utterly insane?patrick bateman and this movie have more to them than just a story about a messed up in the head psychopath who kills people, patrick is also the biggest narcissistic psychopath, killing people who were better than him and who made him feel inadequate, worthless. he couldn't stand anyone being better than him or having better taste than him, for example when luis showed him and the rest is business card, even though all their business cards looked approximately the same (white background, black text placed in the same exact spots), he felt that luis's card was better and was filled with rage and immediately wanted to kill luis, who thought that patrick was into him and started kissing his hands, which made patrick utterly disgusted and immediately washed his hands/gloves and let the idea of killing luis go. but we can also tell that every scene about the business cards is purely satire, highlighting the fact that human beings always find something to make them feel worse, and find the smallest things to bother and anger them. we can also see that bateman doesn't have the balls to kill people with the same social status as him, that being shown when he killed a homeless man and when he admits to killing even more when he is on the phone with his lawyer. about that conversation on the phone, patrick is seen confessing all his murders to his lawyer, right after killing an old woman who saw him almost killing a stray kitten (he had a hallucination if i can say that where the atm said "feed me the stray kitten" or something like that, which showed an episode in which he pretty much lost his time), murder which the police saw and which made them start a chase. when they finally caught up to him, he managed to kill all the police officers by creating an explosion, and, after that, he ran to his office building, where he killed one of the security men (idk how to call him but he was just staying there at the entrance and telling patrick to sign that he was there or something like that) and a janitor. in my opinion, in those moments, patrick felt like he was going crazy and the need to kill everyone, after which he confessed to his lawyer. that was the best scene/part in the movie and one of the best scenes i've ever watched, with a deep meaning to it. the ending was pretty confusing at first, but, in my opinion, the lawyer was just confusing paul allen with someone else just like people do throughout the movie thinking patrick was marcus or paul etc. also, the landlady cleaned up the crime scene and got rid of the bodies so the property value wouldn't go down, this being the reason why she acts weird and tells him to leave.
in conclusion, the whole point of the movie is that everyone was so self involved that they either don't even realize they're associating with a psychopath or don't care and don't want anything to interfere with their own business or pay attention to crucial details. though, whether patrick bateman actually killed or didn't kill all those people is debatable, since some people say that it was just his imagination, his fantasies (bateman being, actually, a schizophrenic psychopath), or that they were all the same person (again, satire), since almost all the male actors looked almost the same, dressed the same, acted the same etc (also highlighting the business card scene, where those cards were identical but in their visions they were different, one was better, the other was worse etc). also, all the men in this movie are all trying to become the same person, the most liked, best in everything they do and overall the one who other men admire/take as an example and who women want, them being pretty much changed by the same standard of the alpha male (since patrick is associated with this by brain rotted kids). but bateman really is and tries to be, as well as the rest of the male characters, the alpha male, which eventually makes him go crazy.
this movie made me honestly want to read to novel too, which never happens to me. best movie i've ever watched, it deserves infinite stars
