Billy Brown’s character, with his painful past and lack of love, perfectly encapsulates a certain form of social violence. You don't necessarily identify with him, but you eventually grasp the mechanics of his suffering.
What I really appreciated is the total refusal of explicit sexual content. In an era where cinema often uses sex as a shortcut for intimacy, the love shown here is at its most bizarre and awkward, yet also its most sincere. It’s a quest for minimal human contact that ends up being more powerful than any standard scene of passion.
