Sinners
“You keep dancing with the devil... one day he's gonna follow you home.”
Vampires in the night, the KKK in the morning. What is freedom and can it ever truly be obtained? I think that by highlighting Sammie’s trauma at the end, we learn that it may only be fleeting.
There was a LOT in this movie and I think it hits all the marks. The soundtrack elevates the whole thing, Miles Caton delivers a crazy good first performance, and the research that went into this movie paid off.
Being able to comment on the historical context of the time period, religion, and how each group of people and their culture impacts the story is hard to manage in the span of 2 hours, but Coogler did just that. A common critique I’ve seen is that the ending felt anticlimactic but I’m not sure what else people expected vampires to do in the sun. The scene with Annie and Smoke towards the end was tragically beautiful, if even a little hopeful.
P.S.
If you’re not a vampire, just eat the garlic.
