Aftersun
I knew that when i watched this film something was going to break. This film gave me so many and contradictory feelings; between the scenes where Sophie and Calum were just living, enjoying and loving each other, and the scenes where you can see them apart: Sophie get in the chaos of the world and Calum struggling with a secret and quiet depression, being a father and having to be okay for his daughter.
The moments where we can see how he broke up just a little bit, breaking traditions and after having the guilty of let down to Sophie.
I can’t see myself at 40, to be honest. Surprised I made it to 30.
That really broke me. You can see how he just dropped it without thinking, just the thought that you have and never get to know how it will sound on your own voice. Since this you can have a clear vision of the depression where he is living.
And there is this feeling, once you leave where you are from, like, where you grew up, that, um, you don’t totally belong there again.
And then we have the nostalgic. I suffer from living in a nostalgic state. I miss my home, the place where I grew up even if I don’t belong there anymore, even if I know that if I get back nothing will be the same, not even me.
I think it’s nice we share the same sky.
¿What do you mean?
Like, we’re both under the same sky, so we’re always together.
Just one of the best dialogues of the film.
And just, I don’t want to say the obvious, but when Sophie tells to Calum if he ever felt like he had an amazing day when he arrives to his house he felt depressed and tired and feel like his bones doesn’t work, they’re just tired and everything's tired, like you were sinking; you can see how that affected Calum because God only knows how much he’s been feeling that way. Btw i read a comment that said that he spit on the mirror because he felt the guilty of passing his demons to his daughter.
Just for close this, when they focused the postcard:
Sophie, I love you very much.
Never forget that.
Dad.
I ALREADY KNEW WHAT WILL HAPPEN AND THAT FUCKING DESTROYED ME.
