Happiness
what I loved about this was how simple the story was compared the storytelling. the compositions were gorgeous and the occasional quick cuts and colour glitches really added to the experience. you pick up on the clear disconnect between the happy/warm tone of the film, and what’s actually happening pretty early.
any other movie would tell you françois was an irredeemable asshole who betrayed his wife and children. but here, he is portrayed as loving, decent, and honest. he isn’t afraid of the consequences of his affair for some reason, and the women appear… accepting?? that the man they love is with someone else. very subversive and interesting approach, and it left me feeling morally confused and very disturbed.
the first picnic was beautiful, idyllic, and full of warmth. everything about the second picnic (and how quickly everyone seemed to move on) felt like I just watched a horror film. and honestly, I think I did?
