The Celebration
Not at all what I expected, but still absolutely incredible. Thomas Vinterberg really dares to explore very sensitive issues, and does so beautifully by throwing it right in your face. Not with violence, instead by switching between dialogues, supported by the amazing performances from the cast, and harsh silences where you very much feel the extreme awkwardness in the room. In my opinion a must-watch for anyone who loves movies, and certainly as a great introduction to Danish or Scandinavian cinema.
I you plan to watch this, I recommend doing some reading on Dogma 95's backstory, as the context will make your watch a whole lot more interesting as you know the reason that it was made. As I said before, Vinterberg uses sensitive themes that in Hollywood would be considered taboo. Therefore he and Lars Von Trier, in 1995, made a list of 10 rules (dogmas), as a sort of rebellion against Hollywood, and thus the name Dogma 95.
