Hell Fest
Honestly, I'm suprised. I was expecting this to be absolutely shit, hilariously so, and what I got was not that. The characters weren't particularly 3D, the performances were decent but felt like they had nowhere to go - by the end their reactions were underwhelming for the scope of what was happening to them, but they were likeable, and good enough, with really nice connections between characters and just enough carelessness to make it believable. No, it won't win an Oscar, but there was great scope that the director took to the fullest extent to make something really visually interesting (at least by comparison to what I've seen), using the excuse to bring in the crazy coloured lighting, smoke effects, and general fake visuals that we do live in horror. It justifies some epic jumpscares, and there were some relatively unique moments of suspense which made it a really entertaining watch. plus, it wasn't as predictable as I expected, with some moments completely defying my 'this'll happen next' mental commentary, with an absolutely brutal ending scene which noone is talking about....?
