Heavy Tomb Raider (2013) vibes from this, that being said, it feels very video game-y sometimes. Shooting this must’ve been a fun time 😭 Enjoyable, good family movie. Taron Egerton must’ve had such a fun time playing a weirdo. There’s this half-assed attempt at showing the backstory and kind of giving some empathy for the villain’s motives, which I don’t appreciate cause it’s so vague and just focuses on the bullshit and dangerous cliche of “he’s mentally ill, so he kills people” There’s a semblance of some childhood S.A message in there but that might be me reaching.

Dumb dumb Anna Kendrick doesn’t she know that women aren’t allowed to be smart, witty or funny? Tch Tch. The way this movie went from a very good 3/5 to a near masterpiece should be studied. What a disgusting, harrowing and just overall nasty story told with so much care. I don’t think I have seen horror depicted like this ever. The direction is also just so good. Inspiring. I’ll go die in a ditch now.

On the rewatch I got to focus more on the cinematography, blocking, dialogue and sound design. This is so beautifully well detailed it’s crazy. It’s also fairly basic too, like it’s not trying to be CRAZY with anything. It’s just being the best it can be for the story. Did notice that the movie relies a lot on sound design. Not a bad thing cause the SFX is top tier. Just an observation. (Edit: if you log the movie more than once a video of Michael Johnston pops up asking you if you’re okay and he gives some trivia 😭)

The way this movie went from a mid yet enjoyable 3/5 to a this is genuinely so beautiful and has so much passion 4/5 is impressive cause that was more character development than the movie itself had. This feels like multiple youtube skits and funny ideas people come up with over a lunch table stitched together into this Frankenstein story and I love it. There’s literally a split diopter shot of Dustin from strangers things eyeing down a pizza box. Absolute cinema.
