Chappie
I AM CONSCIOUSNESS. I AM ALIVE. I AM CHAPPIE.
Chappie marks the third feature from Neill Blomkamp, who is, without a doubt, one of my favorite directors working today. His unique sci-fi vision and world-building are unparalleled, and Chappie is no exception. I love this movie—plain and simple. So, when I found out it wasn’t well-received, I was pretty bummed out. The fact that its "failure" played a role in Blomkamp’s Alien project getting scrapped? That still stings. But let’s dive into why Chappie stands out for me.
Set in a near-future South Africa, we follow Deon (played by Dev Patel), the creator of “scouts,” a robotic police force. Deon is obsessed with AI. After one of the scouts gets trashed, he sees it as the perfect opportunity to test his own advanced AI program. But things go off the rails when he’s kidnapped by gangsters who force him to make his robot serve their criminal plans. And so, Chappie is born. Brought to life by Sharlto Copley, Chappie isn’t just another machine—he’s a robot with the mind of a child, figuring out what it means to be human. It’s fascinating to watch his development as he bonds with Deon and, well, a less-than-ideal crew. Oh, and there’s Hugh Jackman, rocking a mullet, as the film’s villain, who is not too fond of both Deon and his scouts.
Chappie, as a character, is hilarious, but there’s also so much heart in this film. It tackles deep questions: What is consciousness? What does it truly mean to be human? On top of that, the visual effects are stunning. Sure, it’s not quite District 9, and yeah, the acting from Die Antwoord is questionable at times. But I have a ton of love and nostalgia for Chappie. It’s a movie that gets me thinking and keeps me entertained.
Also, let’s not forget—the soundtrack slaps.
