District 9

YOU ARE NOT WELCOME HERE District 9 is one hell of a directorial debut. Neill Blomkamp created something special. He has a real love for science fiction and it shows! The world building isn't too heavy handed or forced, everything feels very natural for what it is. It's a unique and fun story that I'll be rewatching for a very long time. All time favorites for sure. The effects! Man, the effects. I've looked into hours worth of behind the scenes stuff for this movie and it's incredible how they pulled off what they did, especially for 2009. Iconic. And for a first time director?? No one does it like Neill! It's worth a watch for that alone. And I love the documentary style. There aren't too many characters and Sharlto Copley shines and steals every scene he's in as Wikus. His transformation is horrifying but very cool to watch and how it plays into the world we're introduced to. Fucking banger of a movie that needs a sequel ASAP! This is sci fi. This is what it's about.
