“I dont need you to replace mum. But I need someone.”*
now look, i can make a cheap joke about how this is an aftersun 2.0 and call it a day, but this movie was amazing, and it deserves more than just a one liner. i'm completely obsessed with the way this was shot. its a deceptively gentle film—theres brightness, colour, and a sense of adventure, but this does not distract you from its heavy and emotional parts. theres a quiet, persistent ache that does not announce itself. its beauty lies within its simplicity and structure. this movie knows exactly what it wants to be and what it wants to portray, and it does a great job at doing both. i feel like grief has been portrayed in such a beautiful way—how you cannot avoid it, but you learn to live with it and love it. i'm so glad that there were no grand gestures or simple solutions, and that georgie accepted jason through small acts of trust and eventually accepted needing someone in her life. the ending got me so bad. when georgie thought jason left, i was chanting “please come back” to my screen because honestly, my heart was too fragile to accept jason leaving. their hug at the end mended something in me that i didn't know needed fixing. alright, i'm gonna go wash my face and scrub at all the tears that have dried up.
