Sinners
Ryan Coogler might be my favourite director just because his films always leave an impression on me, and he has done the exact same thing this time around too.
It’s just such a perfectly created story and the film develops at the perfect pace, we aren’t just thrown straight into vampire fighting we actually see the lives of the Twins and Sammie on a normal day. It was almost like the theme of the movie changed, which in itself, is the theme of the movie, change. The first half focused on these two entrepreneurial twins setting up a juke joint and recruiting people for it, but the tone immediately changes once those three vampires came to the door. Suddenly the movie isn’t so joyous anymore and it takes a dark turn.
The most impressive thing about this film I would say is the sound and music. When the Twins or Slim would tell a story, the sounds of the story would play, whether that be a knife swinging or a chair breaking your hear it in the background. And obviously the music was insane, the mix of current instruments with the old when Sammie was performing was beautifully made. It was such an impressive scene.
Also props to Michael B. Jordan for being able to play two twins with different personalities, I actually forgot they were the same person for a while. ANOTHER thing that I found great was the dialogue, the language and vocabulary was incredibly immersive, and I think particularly Hailee Steinfield did an amazing job at it.
There’s lots more to touch on, but that would make this review WAY too long to read. Another great Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan work.
