I’m not even a horror movie guy at all, but this was goooooood.
I had only seen the teaser trailer with kids running out the doors, so I quite literally had nothing to go off for the rest of the movie. I think the first half very much keeps up the vibe of the trailer with the different POVs and the mystical element, which is my favourite kind of horror I’m not as into the alien or creature kind of stuff. Every POV was great, but I’d say my favourite was Archer’s because that’s EXACTLY the the type of investigative horror that I just mentioned. That first half had REALLY good horror scenes, I think the fact that we don’t know the motive or anything about who’s behind this genuinely adds so much to the horror of it. Besides that I actually did like the way that the aunt did the magic or spells or whatever, THAT was creative.
But once we got to the second half, it kind of lost my interest. I wasn’t nearly on the edge of my seat as much because it felt like they had already put all their cards on the table by the second half. Don’t get me wrong the final action scenes were pretty good, but it didn’t feel as horrifying as it was before. There’s some things that are just plain dumb too, like what the HELL were the police doing? Archer quite literally did the simplest thing, and an entire police force couldn’t figure it out. Also, how the hell was the main kid not genuinely traumatised, he was wayyyyy too calm the entire time. Even WHILE being threatened there is no way he could be that okay with what’s going on. The ending was a little abrupt and disappointing to be honest, I just thought it could’ve all been better without the aunt revealed so early.
The aunt stuff is mainly what threw me off, the rest is actually good.
