Possession
The way that Anna stared at Christ was truly heartbreaking, it was like watching little kid looking at parent while something that they don't understand happends. She looked at god waiting and begging him to do something, to react, which reminds me of Sylvia Plath quote: > I talk to god but the sky is empty.Anna don't understand her position, why is this happening to her, why she acts like this and Christ gives her this sad disappointed look, instead of warm forgiving glare. Even higher power despite of her when all she need is a help to get out of this madness. Anna works under such pressure and stress, she is torned apart between her family and the her lovers. The creature reflects Anna's perception of herself after cheating on Mark with Heinrich. In eyes of Mark she became monster, a whore. I feel like in society women which cheat while having a family are perceived so much worse than men doing the same. It comes of this patriarchal way of thinking where a woman, mother should be taking care of children and house. I'm not justifing cheating, but that was her way of getting some love in her already dead marriage. Men can do the same and be seen as "manly" and "normal". This creature is personification of shame she has upon her which simply drove her mad. Cheating ment that she stopped being good mother and person in general, she bacame neglectfull and strange and that's how society see mothers in affairs, which obviously doesn't needs to be like that. The character of Anna represents the embodiment of betrayal as the worst sin a woman can commit, it degrades her by comparing her to a monster, a ungodly creature which possesed her. Anna gone crazy because of what she bacame in eyes of world. Even Marks forgivness for her is shown as madness and him still loving her and hidding her sins from world is shown as litterally hidding a murder scene.
