Chicago
All that Broadway Jazz
A broadway musical drenched in jazz style and show-biz razzle-dazzle. Musical is my least favorite genre but this one really caught my attention and just became one of my absolute favorites.
Something about classical jazz soundscape really rewires my brain. The orchestration’s use of saxophone and trumpet brings life to the music and couldn’t stop tapping with my feet as the numbers roared in. All That Jazz as the opening number was the one that did it for me and really set the tone for the rest of the film.
And what a performance from the two leads in this musical. I assume both have had some background in musical theater and if not, boy oh boy, that would be a performance of a lifetime
The editing was fast-paced in my opinion and that probably had a role in why I loved this musical more than any other. This film could be my ticket to just finding a new appreciation for musicals in general.
I love that the underlying concept didn’t get lost within the sweeping numbers: fame, corruption, crime and celebrity worship all intertwine with each other and the entire thing is basically a circus to fool the masses. Beautiful work.
