Chinatown
“Forget it, Jake. It’s Chinatown” perfectly encapsulates the theme of this film. The rules have been written, stamped on a piece of paper and only the rule makers gets to decide whether or not to enforce them. The message is clear: when someone controls the system itself, justice is an illusion
The eye motif really fascinated me in this film.
Jake: There’s something black in the green part of your eye
Evelyn: it’s a flaw in the iris
And then the gut-wrenching ending of the film concludes with Evelyn getting shot through the eye—almost poetic in a cruel way. I love the ending of this film simply because it mirrors how life is and real life doesn’t always tie up neatly. Wrongdoers can thrive, the innocent suffer and power almost always silences the truth.
Roman Polanski really outdid himself in this film. One of the best Neo-Noirs of all time in my opinion. The cinematography was on point and the underlying message was clear: Power when tied with wealth and political influence can bend morality and law to its will and the ordinary people will suffer as a result
