Ed Wood
This film somehow fascinates me in that it’s a satirical biopic celebrating the worst filmmaker of all time. Even trying to pitch the premise of the film to the studio executives must’ve been hilarious. Oh! Tim, the genius that you are.
But at the heart of this story lies an obsessive, fiercely loyal and technically limited man whose love for movies knows no bounds. So instead of satirizing the film and making an absurdist comedy about the life of Ed Wood, it celebrates his passion for cinema and even questions whether the value of an artist lies exclusively on the the quality of work or the passion that drives them.
Honestly a lot of people would resonate with this film so much. Most of the times we don’t get to see the fruits of our hard work and even come across so many challenges in trying to achieve our dreams but when that is rendered unfruitful, then what’s next? The beauty of passion and hard work lies in the courage to keep creating despite failure and that’s what Ed Wood did.
This film is as good as it gets. I’ll always have this profound respect for the cheap theatrical spectacle of B movies. There’s something so beautiful and unique in its storytelling that I know for sure would’ve loved it back in the day. Oh and meta cinema is my go-to sub genre. Always found comforting watching movies about movies.
